WTKR Highlights Benevolent Design Co.’s Veteran Woodworking Initiative
In 2024, WTKR shared a story centered on Benevolent Design Co. and the role craftsmanship plays beyond the furniture itself. The feature focused on how woodworking can become a meaningful outlet for learning, structure, and connection, particularly for veterans navigating life after military service.
The segment explored the studio’s approach to furniture and cabinetry as a hands on craft rooted in patience, precision, and problem solving. Rather than prioritizing speed or volume, the work emphasizes intentional design, durable materials, and processes that value how something is made just as much as the final result.
A significant part of the coverage highlighted the Presence in the Workshop initiative, which offers veterans the opportunity to learn traditional woodworking skills in a supportive, collaborative environment. Participants are introduced to tools, techniques, and workflows while also gaining a sense of routine, focus, and accomplishment through the act of building.
WTKR’s feature captured how working with one’s hands can support confidence, skill development, and personal growth. For Benevolent Design Co., the program reflects a belief that craft can serve as both a trade and a bridge, creating pathways for education, community, and long term opportunity.
